Job Description

OVERVIEW

The Training & Research Unit of Excellence (TRUE) is a leading health research organization dedicated to generating evidence-based solutions that improve maternal and child health outcomes in Malawi and beyond. The Clinical Research Pharmacist leads TRUE's clinical trial pharmacy function. The post-holder is accountable for the investigational product across every TRUE study site—regulatory authorisation, importation and supply, storage, dispensing, accountability, return and destruction—and for ensuring that pharmacy practice at each site meets ICH-GCP, PMRA and sponsor requirements.

Employment Type: Fixed-term (2 years, renewable based on performance and funding)

Reports to: Chief Operations Officer (administrative line management); Principal Investigator of the assigned study or studies (study line)

Supervises: Pharmacy Technicians across all study sites



KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy or related field. A Master's degree or relevant postgraduate training in clinical research, public health, or a related discipline is an added advantage.
  • Professional Certification: Full registration with the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA) of Malawi.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a clinical research pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, or investigational drug service setting. Demonstrated experience in managing investigational products in compliance with ICH-GCP, PMRA, and sponsor requirements is essential . Experience in maternal and child health research is an advantage.
  • Skills: Strong knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and regulatory requirements; excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with high attention to detail; proficiency in inventory management and data entry; strong communication and interpersonal skills for training and supervising pharmacy technicians and liaising with study teams .



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads TRUE's clinical trial pharmacy function across all study sites.
  • Accountable for the investigational product throughout its lifecycle—regulatory authorisation, importation, supply, storage, dispensing, accountability, return, and destruction .
  • Ensures pharmacy practice meets ICH-GCP, PMRA, and sponsor requirements; maintains inspection-ready documentation .
  • Establishes, trains, and leads TRUE's team of Pharmacy Technicians .
  • Carries out defined research governance responsibilities to strengthen the wider research portfolio.
