Job Title: Grader Operator (1)

Nature of Contract: 12 months Fixed Term

Duty Station: Rumphi

Reporting to: Site Manager/Site Agent/Plant & Workshop Manager

JOB SUMMARY

The Grader Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a motor grader to prepare, level, shape, and maintain roads, construction sites, drainage areas, and other earthworks in accordance with project specifications and instructions from the site supervisor.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate the motor grader safely and efficiently on construction sites and road projects.
  • Grade, level, shape, and finish roads, shoulders, embankments, and other surfaces to the required specifications.
  • Carry out rough and fine grading according to drawings, levels, and site instructions.
  • Prepare surfaces for road base, sub-base, gravel, asphalt, or other construction materials.
  • Maintain correct slopes, cambers, gradients, and drainage profiles.
  • Use grader controls and attachments appropriately for different construction activities.
  • Conduct daily pre-start inspections of the grader, including engine, hydraulics, tyres, blade, steering, brakes, lights, and safety equipment.
  • Perform basic operator-level maintenance, lubrication, cleaning, and fluid checks.
  • Report mechanical defects, equipment damage, and safety hazards promptly.
  • Ensure the grader is kept clean and in good working condition.
  • Follow site traffic-management procedures and all health and safety requirements.
  • Work closely with surveyors, foremen, engineers, and other equipment operators to achieve required levels and finishes.
  • Avoid unnecessary damage to underground services, existing roads, drainage structures, and other site infrastructure.
  • Maintain daily equipment/plant operation records, including operating hours and fuel usage where required.
  • Operate the machine responsibly to minimize fuel consumption, wear, and unnecessary downtime.
  • Comply with Malawi road traffic requirements and company policies when operating equipment on public roads.
  • Carry out other reasonable duties assigned by the Site Manager or Plant Manager.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE


  • Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent is an advantage.
  • Relevant heavy equipment/motor grader operator training or certificate.
  • Valid driving licence appropriate for operating or moving the equipment on public roads, where applicable.
  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience operating a motor grader, preferably on road construction or civil engineering projects.
  • Experience with road formation, gravel roads, drainage, and earthworks is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of basic grader maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience working with construction drawings, site levels, or grade stakes is an advantage.

  • Excellent motor grader operating skills.
  • Good understanding of road construction and earthworks.
  • Ability to achieve accurate levels, slopes, and gradients.
  • Strong awareness of workplace and equipment safety.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Good judgment and attention to detail.
  • Reliable, disciplined, and responsible.
  • Ability to work long hours and under varying weather and site conditions.
  • Minimization of equipment damage, downtime, and excessive fuel consumption.
