Job Description

A Production Corporation in Lilongwe is urgently seeking a qualified and experienced Head Mechanic to lead our workshop operations and ensure maximum fleet availability.

JOB PURPOSE

To oversee, coordinate, and supervise all mechanical maintenance and repair activities to ensure Corporation vehicles and equipment are maintained to the highest professional and safety standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and supervise mechanics and workshop assistants in daily maintenance and repair work
  • Diagnose faults and carry out major repairs on diesel and petrol engines, transmissions, hydraulics, brakes, and electrical systems
  • Plan and implement preventive maintenance schedules for fleet and equipment
  • Ensure all repairs meet manufacturer specifications and Corporation's quality standards
  • Control workshop inventory, tools, and spare parts. Raise requisitions and manage costs
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards in the workshop
  • Maintain accurate records of all repairs, services, and vehicle history
  • Ensure to minimize vehicle downtime in maintenance process at the Workshop
  • Train, mentor, and appraise workshop staff to improve technical skills and performance

Requirements

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants should be in possession of:

  • Trade Test Certificate/Diploma in Motor Vehicle Mechanics or related field
  • Malawi School Certificate of Education or Malawi Junior Certificate of Education
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years' hands-on experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory/Head Mechanic role
  • Proven experience working on trucks, plant equipment, or fleet vehicles
  • Strong knowledge of engine diagnosis, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems, also maintenance of TATA trucks
  • Ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams and use diagnostic tools
  • Valid C/CE driver's license is an added advantage
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of SHE standards and workshop management
