OVERVIEW

Water Mission is a Christian engineering nonprofit that builds sustainable, safe water solutions for people in developing countries, refugee camps, and disaster areas. These positions require ability to plan, organize, and coordinate assigned activities related to the office. POSITION 1: TECHNICIAN (7 POSITIONS)

Location: Mangochi (4 Positions) & Zomba (3 Positions)

Reporting to: Project Engineer

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Water Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources, Renewable Energy Systems, or a related field. Candidates with relevant City & Guilds qualifications in Electrical Installation, Plumbing, or Mechanical Engineering/Services may also be considered.
  • Registered or eligible to register with MEI as a Graduate Engineer, Technician Engineer or Craftsperson.
  • Minimum of 3-4 years of experience in WASH project assessment, design, troubleshooting, water quality monitoring, implementation, operation and maintenance.
  • Practical experience working in rural and low-resource settings.
  • Proficiency in using technical equipment and tools for water quality testing and system maintenance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in local language(s) and English.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to remote project sites.
  • Registration with relevant professional body is an advantage.
  • Valid Class B driver's licence.

POSITION 2: SENIOR TECHNICIAN (1 POSITION)

Location: Zomba

Reporting to: Project Engineer (with technical guidance from Projects Engineer)

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Diploma, Higher Diploma, or Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Water Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in construction, installation, and maintenance of rural water supply systems, preferably solar-powered water systems.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising technical teams and contractors.
  • Experience with solar PV installations, electrical systems, plumbing, construction, and water treatment systems.
  • Registration as a Graduate Engineer or Professional Engineer with the Malawi Engineering Institution (MEI) or eligibility for registration.
  • Relevant technical certifications (e.g., T2/T3 Electrical License, NCA certification) are desirable.
  • Valid Class B driver's licence.
  • Ability to drive manual 4×4 vehicle.

POSITION 3: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (7 POSITIONS)

Location: Mangochi (4 Positions) & Zomba (3 Positions)

Reporting to: Lead Community Development Officer

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Community Development, Transformative Community Development, Social Work, Development Studies, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience implementing community development or WASH programs.
  • Experience working with rural communities and community-based organizations.
  • Experience facilitating participatory training and community mobilization.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation, behavior change communication, and capacity building.
  • Experience working with schools, local governments, and development partners is an advantage.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to drive a manual-transmission vehicle.

POSITION 4: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, LEAD (2 POSITIONS)

Location: Mangochi (1 Position) & Zomba (1 Position)

Reporting to: Community Development Coordinator

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Community Development, Transformative Community Development, Social Work, Development Studies, Public Health, or any related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience implementing community development or WASH programs.
  • At least two (2) years of experience coordinating teams or leading community-based programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in community mobilization, stakeholder engagement, behavior change communication, capacity building, and program coordination.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation, donor reporting, and project planning.
  • Experience working with local government, community-based organizations, schools, and development partners.
  • Must have a Valid driver's license and the ability to drive a manual vehicle.

POSITION 5: PROFESSIONALIZED SERVICES OFFICER (1 POSITION)

Location: Mangochi

Reporting to: Professionalized Services Manager

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Water Resources Engineering and Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or another relevant field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience in the WASH sector.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the implementation and sustainability of WASH projects in dynamic and challenging environments.
  • Experience in water utility management, rural water supply systems, or professionalized water service delivery is an advantage.
  • Experience working with government institutions, communities, NGOs, and other WASH-sector stakeholders is desirable.
  • Practical knowledge and experience using EPANET to design, assess, and review hydraulic systems for existing water supply schemes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret financial data, operational metrics, system performance data, and relevant trends.
  • Ability to monitor and interpret KPIs and translate findings into practical recommendations for improved service delivery.
  • Strong understanding of sustainable WASH service delivery and water utility management.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, interpersonal, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Strong report-writing, documentation, and presentation skills.
  • Commitment to promoting sustainability, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement within the WASH sector.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and similar applications.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

POSITION 6: PROJECT ENGINEER (1 POSITION)

Location: Mangochi

Reporting to: Projects Engineer

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Water Engineering is preferred. Alternatively, a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline, with demonstrated experience in water supply engineering.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the assessment, planning, design, and implementation of rural or institutional WASH and water supply projects.
  • Registration as a Graduate Engineer or Professional Engineer with the Malawi Engineering Institution (MEI), or eligibility for registration.
  • Demonstrated experience in hydraulic design, water treatment, solar-powered water systems, and construction supervision.
  • Experience working with an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) or on donor-funded development projects is an advantage.
  • Possession of a valid Class B driver's license.
  • Ability to drive a manual-transmission 4×4 vehicle.
  • Sound technical knowledge of rural water supply systems, groundwater development, water treatment technologies, hydraulic design, and water distribution systems.
  • Proficiency in engineering design and modeling software, including EPANET and AutoCAD; experience with Civil 3D is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong understanding of solar-powered pumping systems and electromechanical water infrastructure.
  • Excellent analytical, engineering design, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong project planning, construction supervision, quality assurance, and contract-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, technical report-writing, and presentation skills.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, supervision, and team-development abilities.
  • High level of integrity, accountability, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.

POSITION 7: HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER (1 POSITION)

Location: Lilongwe

Reporting to: Regional Human Resources Director Africa

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Industrial Psychology, Organizational Development, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Master's Degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or Organizational Development is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible Human Resources experience, including at least three (3) years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Experience working with an International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) is strongly preferred.
  • Membership with the Institute of People Management Malawi (IPMM) or another recognized Human Resources professional body is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience managing recruitment, employee relations, performance management, organizational development, compensation and benefits, and Human Resources compliance.
  • Thorough knowledge of Malawi labour laws, employment regulations, and Human Resources best practices.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and people management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, mediation, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and analytical skills.
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).
  • Ability to analyze Human Resources data and prepare management reports.

  • Ability and willingness to travel periodically throughout Malawi to support field operations.
