Pothawira Health Center is located in the Salima District, approximately two miles from Msangu Market along the Senga Bay Road. The facility comprises a general outpatient clinic, a dedicated birthing unit, and a newly established state-of-the-art surgical center. Summary:
The Pathology Laboratory Technician performs clinical and anatomic laboratory procedures to support diagnostic testing and research. The role includes specimen receipt, preparation, processing, staining, basic microscopic evaluation, data entry, equipment maintenance, and adherence to quality and safety protocols to ensure accurate, timely results.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, accession, label, and track specimens according to chain-of-custody and laboratory policies.
- Prepare tissue specimens for histology (grossing, fixation, embedding, microtomy) and cytology as required.
- Perform routine staining procedures (H&E, special stains, immunohistochemistry) and quality control for all assays.
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate laboratory equipment (microtomes, automated stainers, tissue processors, autoclaves).
- Prepare and process clinical specimens for flow cytometry, molecular testing, or other specialized assays as directed.
- Perform routine laboratory tests and basic microscopic examinations; document and communicate results per protocol.
- Follow established quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures; participate in proficiency testing and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate, legible records in the laboratory information system (LIS) and laboratory logbooks.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (CLIA, CAP, OSHA) and institutional policies.
- Maintain inventory of reagents, supplies, and consumables; place orders and manage stock rotation.
- Adhere to biosafety and infection control procedures; properly dispose of biohazardous waste.
- Assist with training new staff and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Associate degree in Histotechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience: 1–3 years of experience in a pathology or histology laboratory
- Technical Skills: Proficient in microtomy, tissue processing, embedding, routine staining, and basic microscopy. Familiarity with immunohistochemistry and molecular specimen handling is a plus.
- Computer Skills: Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and basic Microsoft Office applications.
