Contract: 18 Months Fixed-Term (Full-time)

Start Date: May 2026 (Subject to funding availability)


Salary (Malawi): MWK 103,443,842 – MWK 152,809,944 per annum (plus benefits)


OVERVIEW

WaterAid is a global organisation committed to ensuring everyone, everywhere has access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene by 2030.


The Project Lead will provide strategic, technical, and delivery leadership for the National Water Compact Delivery Accelerator—a multi-country initiative supporting governments to translate high-level WASH commitments into investable project pipelines.

The role combines senior project leadership with deep expertise in WASH institutional development and financing. The successful candidate will ensure effective delivery, stakeholder engagement, and alignment with international financing standards.

Key Responsibilities


Strategic Leadership & Delivery

Provide overall leadership across all participating countries.

Translate strategy and theory of change into actionable delivery plans.

Ensure achievement of project milestones and objectives.

WASH Institutional Development & Financing

Lead institutional strengthening, governance reform, and financing readiness.

Conduct sector diagnostics (institutional, financial, regulatory, and political economy).

Guide development of multistakeholder platforms.

Government & Stakeholder Engagement

Act as senior interface with government ministries and key stakeholders.

Strengthen political ownership of national water initiatives.

Project Governance & Risk Management

Establish governance structures and oversee decision-making processes.

Ensure quality assurance and consistency across countries.

Monitor risks and ensure compliance with standards.

Team Leadership & Coordination

Lead and manage multidisciplinary teams across countries.

Provide mentorship and direction to technical specialists.

Learning & Strategic Positioning

Capture and share learning, tools, and best practices.

Support organisational positioning on WASH financing and sector reforms.


Requirements


Substantial senior-level experience in WASH sector reform, governance, and financing.

Proven experience managing complex multi-country projects.

Strong understanding of investment preparation and financing mechanisms.

Ability to engage effectively with senior government officials and donors.

Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and political awareness.


Preferred Qualifications


Experience with World Bank, African Development Bank, or similar institutions.


Experience in WASH sector programmes or national reform initiatives.


Background in systems-change or mission-driven programmes.
