Job Description
Emeritus Reinsurance Company Limited is a resident reinsurer in Malawi insurance market providing reinsurance and risk management services through diversified and innovative risk solutions. We collaborate with insurance companies to optimise their insurance risk management. To strengthen further our entity-level risk management, we are currently seeking a dynamic and highly skilled Malawian to join us as a Risk and Compliance Officer to help keep the business secure, uphold our strong reputation, and navigate complex industry regulations.
Reporting to: General Manager – Finance & Administration
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Risk and Compliance Officer will report directly to the General Manager – Finance & Administration. The officer will work closely with the Group Risk and Compliance function to integrate and align business practices and operations with internal frameworks and group-wide guidelines. This role ensures all business operations strictly align with external laws and internal corporate policies. You will oversee daily transactions, identify potential operational risks, and promote a strong culture of compliance and safety across the company.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Risk Management:
- Review and maintain an updated Risk Policy and Framework for the company
- Maintain comprehensive enterprise (corporate-wide) and departmental risk registers to proactively identify, track, and mitigate business threats
- Based on review of procedures and walkthroughs, maintain an inventory of internal controls and map them to key risk areas
- Assist in the execution of corporate compliance, fraud, and risk assessments by identifying the key risks and assessing mitigating controls to determine the risk profile for the company
- Assist in the development, monitoring and tracking of key risk indicators (KRIs) that are mapped to various risks to determine elevations in risk and proactively implement risk mitigation measures
- Identify emerging risks that present new regulatory, fraud, or money laundering risks. This includes risks associated with new products and services, customer types, geographies, and channels
- Coordinate the collection of risk information from source systems, departments, and reporting, analyse the data and apply to various key risk areas to update the risk profile
- Test existing controls to see if they work well
Compliance Monitoring:
- Perform regular checks to ensure adherence to local laws and industry rules
- Communicate and enforce the AML/CFT compliance culture as per KYC/AML/CFT policies
- Conduct policy attestations and provide assistance in developing, updating policies and procedures by enforcing documented standards
- Assist with internal and external audit exercises
- Perform compliance audits (Internal and External) and ensure adherence to all internal operations and evaluate all procedures to maintain accuracy with all internal standards
- Develop and maintain a complete and updated regulatory compliance universe (total set of laws, rules, and standards that apply to the company's business)
- Assist and work in collaboration with Internal Audit to accomplish their assurance activities
- Provide guidance on emerging operational, legal and regulatory compliance matters
- Champion compliance with respect to all environmental, social and governance processes
- Ensure day-to-day adherence to Registrar of Insurance's guidelines
- Prepare clear risk analysis reports and dashboards for the Executive Management and the Board of Directors
Training & Awareness:
- Develop and execute strategic employee training initiatives focused on identifying, assessing, and mitigating company's risks
- Lead staff training sessions on risk management and anti-fraud governance, whistleblower protocols, and financial compliance
- Cultivate staff vigilance by leading regular awareness campaigns regarding emerging fraud trends
- Promote a company-wide culture where staff understand the rules
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance. Holder of CRMA/CRA will be an added advantage
Experience: At least 3 years of proven experience in compliance, auditing, or risk management preferably within an insurance setting
