Job Description
Export Development Fund (EDF) is a development finance institution (DFI) mandated to promote the growth as well as diversification of the country's exports. EDF's mission is to support the Malawi economy through provision of foreign trade solutions to facilitate export diversification, international competitiveness and inclusive growth.
As part of the Gold buying initiative expansion, EDF is intending to open Gold buying Trading Centres (GTCs) in Blantyre, Mangochi, Mzimba and Karonga.
We are therefore inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant positions in the GTCs as follows:
POSITION 1: GEOLOGIST
Reporting to: Manager, Precious Metals and Minerals
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct physical inspection and preliminary assessment of gold presented by suppliers
- Perform gold assaying using appropriate methods (e.g., fire assay, XRF, or other approved techniques)
- Ensure that all testing processes comply with EDF standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices
- Maintain proper documentation of all assays, tests, transactions and reconciliation of gold stock
- Ensure safe handling and secure storage of Gold at the GTC
- Prepare and submit technical reports on gold quality and assay results
- Provide technical guidance to Gold Buying Coordinators and other staff on gold quality matters
Preferred Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Attributes:
- Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, or related field
- Minimum of 2-3 years' experience in mineral analysis, gold assaying, or related field
- Working experience in gold trading, mining, or laboratory environments is an added advantage
POSITION 2: GOLD BUYING COORDINATOR
Reporting to: Manager, Precious Metals and Minerals
Key Responsibilities:
- Enforce compliance with ethical standards and quality requirements throughout the purchase process
- Manage gold deposit routines and timely activity reports
- Maintain accurate records of purchases and stakeholder communications
- Prepare cash and purchasing activity reports to management
- Provide excellent customer service and build strong relationships with clients
Preferred Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Attributes:
- Candidates should possess an accounting degree obtained from accredited institution(s) of higher learning
- Basic knowledge of the precious metals and minerals in Malawi
- Work experience in handling huge volumes of cash – minimum of two years
- Ready to work in the GTCs as directed by management from time to time
- Accuracy in record keeping and ability to enforce compliance with regulations among team members
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and to analyze market data
- Basic procurement or purchasing knowledge and proficiency with MS Office packages
POSITION 3: GOLD CUSTODY OFFICER
Reporting to: Gold Buying Coordinator
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive and take custody of gold after testing, weighing, and payment processing have been completed
- Verify supporting documentation before accepting custody of gold
- Maintain accurate stock registers and records of all gold movements
- Store gold securely in designated safes and storage facilities
- Conduct daily stock reconciliations and report any discrepancies
- Coordinate the transfer and handover of gold to approved storage facilities or Reserve Bank of Malawi
- Prepare periodic stock reports and support audit and verification exercises
- Ensure compliance with security procedures, SOPs, and regulatory requirements
- Report any suspected fraud, theft, loss, or security incidents
Preferred Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Attributes:
- Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Security Management, or a related field
- At least two (2) years' experience in inventory management, stock control, vault operations, or handling high-value assets
