About the Role

Reporting to the Subsidiary Managing Director, the Principal Officer, General Insurance (Malawi) will provide overall strategic and operational leadership for CIC General Insurance Malawi, with accountability for business performance, underwriting profitability, governance, and regulatory compliance.

This role carries statutory responsibility as the Principal Officer in accordance with the Insurance Act (Malawi) and the directives of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), Registrar of Financial Institutions. The role holder is responsible for the day-to-day management of the insurer and ensuring compliance with prudential, market conduct, and corporate governance requirements.


The role oversees the end-to-end performance of the General Insurance business, including strategy execution, underwriting and claims performance, distribution growth, financial stewardship, risk management, and stakeholder engagement. Appointment to this role is subject to approval by the Reserve Bank of Malawi, and the successful candidate must meet the prescribed “Fit and Proper” criteria.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Business Direction

  • Develop and execute the strategic plan for CIC General Insurance Malawi in alignment with Group strategy, Malawi market dynamics, and RBM regulatory expectations.
  • Drive sustainable and profitable growth through disciplined underwriting, portfolio management, and strategic partnerships.
  • Identify and lead growth opportunities across products, customer segments, and distribution channels.
  • Ensure long-term competitiveness while maintaining sound technical performance and capital adequacy.

Business Growth & Market Development

  • Lead business development and distribution strategies to maximize growth, retention, and profitability.
  • Strengthen intermediary channels including brokers, agents, bancassurance partners, and corporate relationships.
  • Champion product innovation aligned to customer needs, market trends, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee marketing and brand initiatives to enhance visibility, trust, and market share.

Operational Excellence & Digitization

  • Ensure disciplined underwriting practices aligned with approved guidelines, pricing frameworks, and reinsurance arrangements.
  • Oversee claims operations to ensure timely, fair, and efficient settlement in line with regulatory standards and policyholder protection principles.
  • Drive a performance-oriented underwriting and claims culture supported by data, analytics, and strong internal controls.
  • Lead operational efficiency initiatives including process optimization, automation, and digital transformation.
  • Oversee ICT systems to ensure effective policy administration, claims management, customer service, and regulatory reporting.

Regulatory, Risk & Governance Oversight


  • Ensure full compliance with the Insurance Act (Malawi), RBM directives, prudential guidelines, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Serve as the designated Principal Officer, accountable for the conduct of the insurer’s business and regulatory compliance.
  • Act as the primary liaison with the Reserve Bank of Malawi (Registrar of Financial Institutions) on all regulatory matters.
  • Maintain required capital adequacy, solvency margins, and liquidity thresholds at all times.
  • Oversee enterprise risk management, internal controls, governance frameworks, and audit processes.
  • Ensure compliance with AML, CTF, and KYC requirements in line with Malawi laws.
  • Safeguard policyholder interests through fair treatment, transparency, and efficient claims handling.


Financial Management & Performance Management

  • Lead financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting to ensure profitability, cost efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Monitor key performance indicators including loss ratios, combined ratios, expense ratios, and underwriting margins.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant financial and regulatory reporting in line with RBM and Group requirements.

Leadership, Culture & People Management

  • Build and lead a high-performing management team aligned with CIC’s values and performance expectations.
  • Drive employee engagement, leadership development, and succession planning.
  • Promote a strong governance culture, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ensure compliance with Malawi labour laws and Group People & Culture policies.


Who We’re Looking For

Academic & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, Business Administration, Actuarial Science, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, CII, or equivalent is required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 9 years’ experience in the General Insurance sector, with at least 4 years in a senior management role.
  • Proven track record in underwriting, claims management, business growth, and operational leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging regulators, Boards, reinsurers, and key stakeholders.
