OVERVIEW

Africa Sun Power Limited (AFSP) is a Malawi-based high-growth clean-energy company building on more than a decade of grassroots solar technology development. The Company is focused on expanding access to affordable solar electricity and clean-energy solutions, particularly for rural communities in Malawi and across Africa. Its activities include solar energy systems, solar e-cooking, solar pumping, long-life batteries and the use of climate and development finance to make clean energy more affordable.

Africa Sun Power Limited is inviting Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to fill a vacancy on its Board of Directors.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Company is seeking a dynamic, committed and experienced individual who can contribute to the strategic direction, governance and continued growth of Africa Sun Power Limited.

We are particularly interested in individuals with significant experience or demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Renewable energy and clean energy, including solar energy.
  • Environmental conservation, climate change and sustainable development.
  • Clean cooking and energy-access initiatives.
  • Corporate law, commercial law and corporate governance.
  • Advocacy, public policy and development.
  • Academia and research, particularly in renewable energy, clean energy, environmental or related fields.
  • Business development, entrepreneurship or investment.
  • Finance, accounting or strategic management.
  • Experience working with development organisations, social enterprises, private-sector companies or other organisations in the energy or development sectors.

Experience in solar energy is highly desirable, but applications are not restricted to solar-energy professionals. The Company welcomes individuals who can bring complementary expertise, perspectives, networks and experience that will strengthen the Board and support the Company's growth.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide strategic guidance and independent judgement to the Board.
  • Contribute to the development and oversight of the Company's strategy and business plans.
  • Provide expertise and advice within their area of professional competence.
  • Support effective corporate governance, accountability and responsible decision-making.
  • Review and provide constructive input on Company policies, budgets and major business decisions.
  • Contribute to the Company's efforts to expand affordable clean-energy access.
  • Participate actively in Board meetings and, where required, Board committees and other Company activities.
  • Support the development of strategic partnerships and networks relevant to the Company's objectives.
  • Act at all times in the best interests of Africa Sun Power Limited.

Requirements

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Significant professional or practical experience in at least one relevant field.
  • A strong interest in renewable energy, clean energy, environmental sustainability or energy access.
  • Strategic thinking, sound judgement and strong analytical abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Integrity, independence and commitment to good corporate governance.
  • Ability to work constructively with people from diverse professional and social backgrounds.
  • Willingness to contribute time, knowledge and professional networks to the Company's development.

LOCATION AND MEETINGS

Africa Sun Power Limited is based in Blantyre, Malawi. Board meetings are conducted through a combination of in-person and virtual participation.

Candidates based in Blantyre are particularly encouraged to apply, given the need for occasional in-person participation in Board meetings and Company activities. However, suitably qualified candidates from elsewhere in Malawi are also encouraged to apply, provided they can participate effectively in both virtual and occasional in-person meetings.

BOARD MEMBER COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Board members will be compensated in accordance with the Company's applicable policies and approved arrangements.

The Company will provide an attendance allowance/honorarium for Board meetings and reimburse reasonable costs necessarily incurred in attending approved Board meetings and Company events.

In addition, the appointed Board member will contribute to the development of an equity compensation plan for employees and Board members, which is intended to be presented for consideration and approval at a General Meeting of Shareholders to be held within the next six months.
